Despite the blizzard-like conditions, baseball is starting in less then 2 months!

I sent an auto-email to everyone that was in last year. Hope we get a full league!
We can hammer out draft dates and such later.
Boston Met Fan
thanks for setting this up again.
Crap. Blocked on the work computer. Ill do it when I get home.
BringBackDaveTelgheder
Do we want to have a head-to-head matchup or roto scoring?
Both have their pluses and minuses.
Yahoo also has an auction draft where you bid on players for the first time this year.
bix
i like roto.
and auction would be fun for a change! (too much can hinge on draft order otherwise).

I hate roto, Id rather have regular points scoring than head to head. Once you're behind its hard to catch up. How about stricter limits on player moves.
Just my two cents.
LVMetsFan
5 in so far including me :)
I'm happy with roto - agree with some limitation on the # of moves.
BringBackDaveTelgheder
OK, Sounds like roto is what everyone likes so far. Last year we capped the innings so you couldn't go crazy on pitchers and it seemed between fair. I think I'll add 50 or 100 ip to it as a lot of us were over by the end of the year without making a ton of moves.
For those that don't know, auction is set up so that each team has a budget. Every player you nominate to draft you set a value on. So if someone here reallllllly wanted Chipper Jones, and they bid $20 on him. Other teams can bid $21 on him. The strategy changes because you can target guys that you think are bargains.
But it makes no difference to me. Whatever the majority wants is cool.
Phil the Phan
How would an auction work for people who aren't there live?
BringBackDaveTelgheder

Therein lies a problem. They'd rank the order of players to bid on, and the max dollar they'd give to a player.
bix
Glad we are going roto.
I've never played in an auction league before and would really like to try it. If we do go that route, we should really work hard to find a time that works for everyone.
capping IPs is a no brainer.
I prefer no cap on moves.

Whatever the majority wants but Id rather have no auction. Have I mentioned I hate roto scoring ;)
LVMetsFan
While I like the idea of an auction - it just seems like too much work - and as it would put people who can't make the draft at even more of a disadvantage (we always have at least a couple of folks who can't make it).
The limits on the innings pitched worked great last year - I'm OK with raising it a little bit.
Phil the Phan

As do I. I only play H2H now--may not be as fair or accurate but it's more fun.

Well Id say put a cap on pitching moves. I think a couple of us had issues with this last year.
BringBackDaveTelgheder

There was no issue last year, we had an innings cap. The problem was 2 years ago we didnt cap moves or innings and did the failed points method. (which I will never try again)
There should be no limits on players moves. If we cap innings, the incentive for adding pitchers is minimized and there is zero advantage to doing a ton of daily moves on position players.
Looks like the sentiment is for a normal draft which is fine.
We still seem pretty much split on roto and head to head.

So you're fine with someone working the free agent system and add and drop pitchers at will to take advantage of whoever is starting the next day? Well it is "fantasy" baseball I guess.
Phil the Phan
If there's an innings cap and an owner does as you described, they'll be out of innings by August.

Exactly. Last year it was tight enough that I almost had to bench innings eaters at the end of the year because I was so close to going over.
BringBackDaveTelgheder
Right now we have 7 teams - can use a few more.

auction would be fun for a change! (too much can hinge on draft order otherwise).
I took part in a Yahoo Auction Draft yesterday--took about 3 1/2 hours to finish. Was fun at first but by mid-draft became very tedious.
The biggest flaw is when the owner is absent bots do the bidding--and it's based on the estimated value; they jump-bid right to that value making it very difficult to sneak through "bargains."
I think I made out pretty well...these are my starters:
Joe Mauer C
Kendry Morales 1B
Aaron Hill 2B
Jose Reyes SS
A-Rod 3B
Jason Bay OF
Manny Ramirez OF
Jason Kubel OF
Johan Santana SP
Roy Oswalt SP
Joakim Soria RP
Fernando Rodney RP
and late in the draft as $ 1 pickups I grabbed Darren O'Day and Chien-Mien Wang.
BringBackDaveTelgheder
I think we should change the Wins category to Win Percentage.
That way if you stack pitchers to get K's, you can get hurt if you pick up guys that will get you losses and drag down the %.
Between that, a 75 move cap during the season and an innings cap, I think we should be fine.
LVMetsFan
I'd prefer just sticking with wins. Sometimes you get quirky stuff happening with releif pitchers and Ws and Ls.
bix

yeah. that's a very good point. let's stick with wins.
if you stack pitchers to gets Ks, you are gonna get killed in whip and ERA as it is.
Boston Met Fan
I'd rather not get too bogged down in percentages. For me, roto scoring is hard enough. :D
PS : Are we locked in to that draft time. Just want to make sure Im home.
LVMetsFan
What is our time again? I'm traveling so much for work the next couple of weeks that I may have to autodraft again (but that worked out pretty well for me last year).
BringBackDaveTelgheder
As of now it is Thu Mar 25 7:00pm.
We only have 7 people, we can really use a few more.

I drafted a league (Head to Head) with friends at ESPN's site this weekend...they have an interesting way of dealing with the whole limits thing--they set a limit of 5 transactions per week. Makes it very diificult to so the kind of stuff that's upset people in the past.

That's an interesting way to do it. Yahoo doesn't have that feature, but they do have weekly lineup changes instead of daily which would clear it up.
I personally see no issue now that we have an innings cap and a moves cap. There were no issues last year.

Yeah I know there are other good ones out there but I for one am set in my ways for fantasy.
I do a pay league in baseball called www.baseballmanager.com
It's different then any other league that's out there, but I've been playing online for the last 16 years or so and don't think any other league is close.

I like the variety; I play one each on yahoo, espn, and mlb. Also do one live draft, one autodraft, and this year one auction draft. Only thing that stays the same is I only play H2H.
BringBackDaveTelgheder
Just a reminder the draft is tomorrow, Thu Mar 25 7:00pm.
If anyone else wants to join, feel free! Info is above.

I'm probably going to miss the draft again this year - but I'm cool with that (I'll take my chances like I did last year :) ). Have fun tomorrow night!

I'm teaching from 6-9 tomorrow night. wont be there either.
with only 7 teams, there will be plenty of good players at every position.

-4.5 for yesterday, ugh!
LVMetsFan
Ouch!
As for me, I just have to keep my pitchers from going against the Mets :) Or maybe not, as the Mets seem to beat them every time.
Lobsterback
hi fellow Fantasists, I'm searching for some advice. This year is my very first ever playing Fantasy Baseball and I'm very much learning the ropes.
My league just yesterday just changed it's rules to allow the picking up of players on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays - before then you had to wait until Sunday night. We have a dollar limit which limits the amount of transactions we can have but I've been thinking that with there now being 3 windows of opportunity to pick up new players is it a valid strategy to pick up new pitchers if you know they're going to pitching the following day, dumping them and getting another one and so on and so on? Anyone play this way?
While I dont really know what I'm doing I'm currently 3rd (out of 7) and as the prize is a signed Carlos Beltran ball (which will go very nicely with my existing collection of baseballs) I'm very very eager to win it all!
bix
totally depends on factors you havent told us.
are there max innings?
how many pitching categories are averages (era, whip) and how many are totals (wins, ks, svs, etc)
rotisserie scoring or points? season long, or head to head?
Lobsterback
5x5 NL only. Not head to head. No Max innings. Wins/K's/Saves/ERA/WHIP
ps - everyone starts with $100. I'm down to $86. Mostly - up to now - you can get available players for $1 as there havent been any bidding wars.
Phil the Phan
To answer your question, we did have a guy or two who utlizied that strategy a couple of seasons ago, and IIRC it was a pretty succesful strategy.
It will likely cheese off some of your fellow owners though; be prepared for some "negative feedback." :)
BringBackDaveTelgheder
It all depends on the caliber of guys you are claiming. If you're picking up crappy guys, going for Wins and K's, you may end up hurting your Whip and ERA which negates the other categories. Right now if you are weak in Wins/K's, it's a good idea.

I would put it the other way around. if you are already a bit weak in era and whip, then I would go for it.
if you are really going to employ that strategy, the time to do it is at draft. that way you can stock up on the offensive side, throw whip and era to the wind, and build a decent k and wins column.
Lobsterback
Thanks guys, my two weakest spots at the moment are ERA (I'm 5th out of 7 in that category) and WHIP (7th) so I guess I could gain more on K's and W's than I might lose on ERA. I have pitchers that I dont want to get rid of at the moment but I have a spot currently occupied by Randy Wells which I might use as my 'one start and you're dropped' spot. As for it not going down well with others - I didnt vote for the new way of doing things so it's their lookout!
Fantasty Baseball has a habit of taking over everyday life doesnt it?! I spend waaaay too much time thinking about it. Once the soccer World Cup kicks in as well I fear my work output will finally grind to a halt!

If he's still available, grab Stephen Strasburg. He'll be in the majors in a matter of weeks.
Lobsterback
nah, he's gone - he went in the draft. What do you make of Aroldis Chapman?
