As U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg begin chemotherapy today after being diagnosed with treatable cancer in the stomach, New Jersey political leaders from both sides of the aisle offered their support and encouragement.

“One thing we all know for sure about Sen. Lautenberg is that he’s a tough guy who never backs down from a fight," said Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-Essex). "As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t be too surprised to soon hear how he’s once again outpacing younger aides as they walk through U.S. Capitol building. After all, nothing has ever been able to hold Sen. Lautenberg down."

State Republican Chairman Jay Webber wished the 86-year-old Senator a "speedy recovery."

"We are saddened to hear about it," Webber said. "The only appropriate discussion today is a discussion of how everyone hopes Frank Lautenberg gets better as fast as possible."

The Democrat still plans to finish out his current term – his fifth in the Senate – and seek re-election in 2014.

Lautenberg took ill Monday while at home in Cliffside Park. He fell down and phoned his doctor and an ambulance. The senator directed the ambulance to transport him to Manhattan for treatment at Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he has been hospitalized ever since. Lautenberg never lost consciousness, his aides said.

This is the first time Lautenberg has been diagnosed with cancer. His last health scare occurred seven years ago when he suffered a head injury in a skiing accident.

hoping he gets well...but dear God he can't run again!!
