NBC has canceled Law & Order, it announced Friday, putting the seminal Dick Wolf procedural one season shy of becoming the longest-running drama series in TV history. In addition, the network ordered a new spin-off, Law & Order: Los Angeles, and renewed Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Law & Order will air its 20th-season and series finale Monday, May 24 at 10/9c.

"The full measure of the collective contributions made by Dick Wolf and his Law & Order franchise over the last two decades to the success of NBC and Universal Media Studios cannot be overstated," Jeff Gaspin, chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment, said in a statement. "The legacy of his original Law & Order series will continue to make an impact like no other series before."

Added NBC Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad: "Law & Order has been one of the most successful franchises in the history of television, which is why it is so critical that we continue this important brand and our relationship with Dick Wolf and his team with LOLA and Law & Order: SVU."

The news comes just a day after reports surfaced that the mothership series was canceled, but discussions between Wolf and NBC reportedly continued late Thursday.

Law & Order's demise means it will leave the air tied with Gunsmoke as TV's longest-running scripted drama.

Since its 1990 debut, Law & Order set a new model for the crime procedurals that have come and gone since, and employed thousands in New York City. In addition to LOLA — casting for which is currently underway — and SVU, it has launched two other spin-offs: Law & Order: Criminal Intent, which currently airs on USA, and the short-lived Law & Order: Trial by Jury.

The series won an Emmy for outstanding drama in 1997, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Sam Waterston and Jerry Orbach, who was awarded posthumously.

Its ratings, however, have seen better days. The most recent new episode attracted 6.17 million viewers and a 1.7 rating in the adults 18-to-49 demographic.

S. Epatha Merkerson to leave Law & Order after 16 years

Law & Order's scheduled May 24 series finale date coincides with that of 24 and will come a day after Lost signs off the air — bringing three of the most important shows of the last decade to a nearly simultaneous close.

:(

There was no chemistry between the two new detectives. I think people accepted the change better when one left at a time - but two new detectives at the same time... it's like trying to get a horse to eat from a new bail of hay without mixing in any old. Sometimes they actually starve to death.

LA sucks.

And the SVU episodes are too intense - especially lately.

I liked regular and CI.

I do like Jeff Goldblum's new partner, though. It's the first time they had the ridiculous Columbo-like omnipotence written in for the female partner. I hope they get a few more seasons of that in before Dick Wolf starts an SVU Miami and it all blows up in his face.

we still watch SVU...but we're backlogged about 3 episodes on DVR...not a priority...

This sucks. Another show leaves NYC.....lots of actors and crew out of work.

Is Criminal Intent still going to be in production? I know it's only on USA now - can't stand Jeff Goldblum.

Hate the idea of them making a Law and Order: LA. I guess it will depend on the casting whether or not I'll give it a try. Not fond of shows taking place in L.A., for some reason.

Me neither. I guess it's not very rational. But I feel the same way. If it's in NYC it has a much better chance with me. Then Chicago. But LA... maybe because I didn't like CA in general when I was there, I don't know.

Then again - I hate the cold and I loved Northern Exposure.

As far as LA shows go, I liked NUMB3RS and Columbo. I liked Simon and Simon when I was little, but I think that was San Diego. And where was Remington Steele? I think that was LA and I think that was about it as far as LA shows I liked.

alice
That had everything - a What Not to Wear spoof - "Skyler"...

the Stacy character was well cast, but she didn't pull it off
the Clinton character, on the other hand, wouldn't have struck me as Clinton in casting - but he nailed it

How long have they been doing back to backs? The first episode as pretty good.

The thing that pisses me off the most about this is that NBC totally fucked up when they did the Leno experiment, moving L&Os all over the place and then acting surprised when they didn't get ratings.

I'm still mad about how they shitcanned a good show like Life for that Leno crap. And now L&O is another victim.

NCIS already has an LA show, why does L&O need one too?

Totally agree.
