View Full Version : What is wrong with people??

Phil the Phan
So late April I apparently had a "silent" heart attack. I have also have several blocked arteries, and Tuesday I'll be going into St. Francis to have some stents put in.

I don't tell you this for your good wishes--though they are welcome--but rather because of the way almost every one of my friends has reacted to my news.

I've heard about this with pregnant women as well--why is everyone suddenly bombarding me with horror stories of their own surgeries, complete with bad reactions to anasthesia, prolonged hospital stays,. nicked arteries, leaky sutures, and every other mishap and calamity known to man? Do they really think I need to hear about all this???

OK--I just needed to vent. Carry on.

Say Hey
Good luck.

So I had an uncle who did this.

Everything went perfectly.

Said he felt better than he had in years.

Tormented
Good luck. If my dad who was in awful health to begin with can endure crap like that and survive, I think you'll be fine.

Aaaaaarge2
I don't know why people do that...they just don't think before they open their mouths.

Anyway good luck with your procedure. St. Francis is a very good hospital.

Have a drink. You'll feel better. ;)
Good luck with the surgery.

Boston Met Fan
Good luck. My dad just had surgery on his aorta a couple of weeks ago and he is doing fine. ;)

My old boss has at least half a dozen stents and he's doing great.

Best of luck to you!

i think a lot of people are very selfish and just need all the focus to be on them. they don't even stop to think if someone wants to hear it-- they just want to get attention for their own dramatic story.

LVMetsFan
Best wishes!

MaricopaMetFan
I just wanted to tell you good luck, we're counting on you.

metfan41
Good luck, Phil. I hope all is well with you. ;)

Rock-N-Roll
And people can be very stupid and insensitive, trying to make every situation about them. Best of luck with the stents Phil, I'm sure everything will work out great!

I think you hit the nail on the head.

Best wishes Phil.

FYI I'm home as of yesterday...got 5 stents in 2 arteries...have to go back in a few weeks for one more artery.

Thanks again for the thoughts.

In that case I'll save my story until after then ............. ;)

Glad it's gone well, hope the journey to fully restored health continues smoothly.

Wow, glad everything went well. When is/was the other surgery? Good luck if it is still upcoming.

I think it was today...

All the best, Phil. Even a common procedure can be a little nerve-wracking when it's your coronary arteries they are sticking wires and such into.

I've been having heart issues with premature contractions, blocked premature contractions & crazy tachycardia (up to 150 at rest). One cardiologist said a possible fix was threading a wire into my sinus node, and killing that part of the heart.

:omg:

My reaction was basically, "no you're not", :nono: and found a new doc.
Too scary.

Khaos - ablations are so routine, and they really can help. I hope you both feel better.

My new (& very wonderful) cardio doc said the other doc was wrong & it would be an inappropriate procedure for my particular issue.
He also said that from what he's seen, in most cases, the arrythmia comes back & worse than before.

So far, so good, on a little bitty dose of good old-fashioned atenolol.
I'm also hoping that once they get my thyroid optimized, that maybe the arrythmias will just go away (they're not sure if it's related, but that doesn't stop me from wishing it! ;) )

Hoping Phil had a nice uneventful procedure!

Good news about your doctor.

It always advisable to get a second (or third) opinion. Also general internet research isn't a bad idea.

Indeed. Based on symptoms, I had to research thyroid stuff, and make the doctor order the proper bloodwork - 3 doctors, for years have said "we'll test the thyroid" - but testing the wrong thing (as do MOST docs... the standard test is WRONG).
Lo & behold... thyroid is tanked. You seriously have to be your own informed advocate.

Went in Monday for a stent, came home last night with a stent and a pacemaker.

Well, you made it through. How do you feel? Can you still use microwave ovens?

Phil the Phan
Microwaves yes but I can't be wanded at ballparks/airports anymore, and MRIs are out forever.

I feel like crap--but I know I'll feel better and soon.

I have an underactive thyroid and an overactive heart.

Go figure.

How do you prevent being wanded??? does just telling the security personnel work?? There always be some bozo who will do it just to spite you.

Glad you are home!!!!

Ah - the thyroid can be a bitch when it comes to arthymias.

However, my family has had a great deal of success with ablations.. We have a genetic tachycardia, and probably 4 cousins have had it done. No further problems, as far as 20 years later.

No one accurately tested my thyroid until i started seeing my reproductive endocrinologist. Fortunately all of my tests came back normal, but I agree that the standard t3/t4/TSH tests hardly show the entire picture.

I actually have an ID card that exempts me. They're risking serious injury to me, loss of job to them, and lawsuit to their employer, if they insist.

I also take synthroid for my underactive thyroid.

Do the doctors say it still ok to be a Mets fan?

Phil the Phan
They're ok with that--they're not so hapy I'm an Obama supporter tho...he seems to have pissed off a goodly numnber of the medical profession.

Khaos
Phil - make sure they test thyroid for Free T3 & Free T4 - that is thyroid hormones which are available for use. FT4 had to be midrange of norm & FT3 2/3 to 3/4 of norm to be optimal.
Most docs only prescribe synthroid (T4), and they don't even check the free t3, so if that's low, too, you're screwed.

They usually only test TSH to diagnose...in reality that's a pituitary test, NOT a test of thyroid function.
All the years my TSH has been normal, but as it turns out, the thyroid isn't doing anything with it.

It took me a while to find a doc who will test & prescribe T3. I asked if he wanted to retest the TSH, and he said he wasn't concerned about it. Finally someone who "gets it".

So anyway...to you & any other thyroid peeps - MAKE THEM test thyroid production!

Gen - I'm glad you found an endo who doesn't only know diabetes!
