View Full Version : Wright, Reyes All-Stars...no Pelfrey

Phil the Phan
Wright's starting, Reyes an injury replacement for Tulowitzki.

Don't know by what meausre Pelf isn't deserving--he's not even on the "alst man" fan vote.

I'm not crazy about Reyes going to the ASG when he's coming off an injury himself.

Some folks are crying about Strasburg not making it.

Cyberlibrarian
Pelf is definitely deserving. What was Charlie thinking?

Pelfrey will be added when some pitcher bows out.

Phil the Phan
I dunno...there are several pitchers on the "last man" poll; I would think they'd have first crack at any opening. Not one Padre Pitcher is currently represented.

BTW--Gary is right; it's borderline obscene that Votto didn't make the team; he's getting my "last man" vote.

I'm long on record that I don't like ANY Mets taking part in any aspect of the all-star festivities--especially the HR derby.

Boston Met Fan
Wagner and Youkilis got my vote for the last spot.

im with you, rather everyone gets the days off and gets ready for the pennant race as opposed to flying cross country to play in this stupid exhibition

dont think so. he's due to start sunday.

Right that's what I was thinking...that new rule on Sunday pitchers being ineligible. It's BS, he should be selected and then repicked or something since he can't play.

I didn't see it mentioned but the biggest outrage is Joey Votto...arguably the MVP of the NL and he didnt even make the team...and Ryan Howard did....unreal.

Cyberlibrarian
I'm voting for Votto and Youk.

Phil the Phan
Pelf wasn't passed over because of the Sunday rule--under that rule, pitchers who would have been selected still gat named, get to go, are introduced and receive all the other honors--they're just replaced on the active rosters.

None of that happened here--he was just plain passed over.

pelf is pitching saturday now bc the rotation got all flipped around but he didnt help his chances tonight

NyerInTex
How 'bout Dickey?!?!:)

I think he is more a victim of the every team has to have one representitive thing.

According to the Daily News yesterday, when Manual was asked about a few pitchers who didn't make it including Big Pelf he said that they were pitching Sunday. So no matter what the rule actually is, if Manual thinks he can't pick a guy pitching Sunday then that's how he picked.

Phil the Phan
Yeah I read that too--there was no one from MLB who could explain to him how the rule worked? Moron.

OTOH, Girardi picked CC knowing he was going Sunday and wouldn't be eligible; that was how he planned on getting Pettitte onto the team. Turned out it wasn't necessary; Pettitte is going as aninjury replacement for someone else. But Girardi clearly understood the system.

I'm voting for Votto and Youk.

Ditto. They are currently leading the voting.

Randolph had problems figuring out the double switch too.

Unfortunately, Yankmee fans got Swisher over the top. Youk's staying home. :(

Phil the Phan
To be fair, Swisher's having a very good first half--.307/14/48 vs Youk's .292/17/55.

tigger
I don't care, Swisher gives good interviews and is likeable and i've never found Youk's attitude very appealling. So I only voted NL.

Phil the Phan
Never heard him interveiwed but he was pretty good guest-starring on How I Met Your Mother last season...

Youk is a dirty-jersey kind of guy who is very intense. I would take him on my team in a heartbeat.

Im glad someone showed some sense here.

Wright goes 2 for 2 with 2 singles and a stolen base in the all star game. Defensively he had one assist and one putout on a sharp line drive. David clearly had the best offensive line through 5 innings, so Charley Manuel decided to replace him with Scott Rolen. ;)

Phil the Phan
It's the Little League mentalty of "everyone has to play" that's one of the biggest reasons I don't even watch the game anymore.

The biggest reasn was really made clear when I watched the '65 game on MLB the other night: We don't have any legendary ballplayers. My kids (and wife forthat matter) go "wow!!" when I tell them I got to see Mays, Mantle, Koufax, Aaron, and the others of that era.

20 years from now, when we tell our kids or grandkids about the 2000s, does anyone really think kids are gonna be all that impressed that we saw A-Rod, or Barry Bonds, or any of today's players?

Somewhere along the line they've lost that mystique. The All-Star game used to be an event--now it's a 3-plus hour coin toss.
