LOS ANGELES -- Omar Minaya is standing by his manager.

The Mets general manager said yesterday that there are no plans to fire Jerry Manuel, even as the team continues a free-fall that included getting swept three games by the pathetic Diamondbacks before last night's 2-0 loss to the Dodgers.

"There is no discussion at all," Minaya said. "Jerry Manuel is our manager, will be our manager. I'm very happy with the job that he is doing."

Minaya made the comments before the Mets (49-47) fell to 1-7 on a road trip to start the season's second half.

"Jerry's our manager," Minaya said. "For me to discuss Jerry's job status after a losing streak is just not right.

"Teams are going to have losing streaks. He's our manager and I see him being our manager."

Manuel laughed off a report in yesterday's Post that suggested he's on the hot seat.

"You got on me again?" Manuel said. "That's when I run off 10 straight [victories]."

The manager said he speaks often with team COO Jeff Wilpon.

"I get unbelievable support," Manuel said. "It's always a conversation about how do we get better. It's never about me."

Just after Manuel made that comment, Minaya appeared near the dugout.

"Oh, what's going on?" Manuel shouted. "Did you say two-year extension?"

Minaya laughed at the question.

"Welcome to New York, brother," Minaya said.

The general manager blamed the Mets' stagnant offense for the team's woes.

"All teams go through these phases," he said. "Hopefully we won't stay in this phase of losing the way we have the past couple of games for long. We've got to hit."

I really am coming to hate Jerry and Omar more and more by the day.

Fire those 2 clowns and HoJo.

I hope Omar is standing by Jerry when Jeff fires both of them!

If Omar is giving his "vote of confidence" schtick to the media, then the decision to can Jerry (or both of them) will come down from "on high" via Jeffy Boy.

Firing people won't do a thing right now....

You can't fire the GM with one week to go until the trade deadline, and when Jerry is going I'm pretty sure that Omar is going too. Batting coaches do so little it's a complete scapegoat move.

With that being said..which one of these three scenarios would you prefer?

1)Mets win World Series. Jerry and Omar assured of another 5 years in NY.
2)Mets get into playoffs and lose. Jerry and Omar most likely fired.
3)Mets miss playoffs. Both fired at end of season.

I think anyone not rooting for Option 1 is crazy. I am not a big Jerry fan, but with out circumstances he's going to be around most likely for the rest of the season, how can I root against him?

Rooting for yes, think it will happen with Jerry as manager, no.

Every time I hear anything like this, I always think about hearing Steve Phillips on the FAN addressing the catcher situation back in '98. "Todd Hundley is and will be our catcher."

The thing is, that was said to appease the Todd fan base. What Omar said about Jerry was said with no concern for the Met fans at all. And the joking around by them about the extension means they are both clueless idiots who need to go.
