View Full Version : Marlins ban pie celebrations after Coghlan tears up knee

Florida Marlins outfielder Chris Coghlan joins Angels first baseman Kendry Morales on the disabled list today -- and in the gallery of baseball's all-time zany injuries.

Coghlan suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee -- planting a pie in the face of teammate Wes Helms after the pinch-hitter's game-winning single Sunday against Atlanta. The injury was diagnosed by MRI Monday and doctors will see how it responds in the next day or two before deciding whether surgery is required.

The reigning NL rookie of the year, hitting .268 with five homers and 28 RBIs, will be out two-to-three weeks if surgery isn't needed; six-to-eight if it is.

Marlins' manager Edwin Rodriguez has banned the "pie celebrations," in which the hero of the day receives a full plate of shaving cream in the face, usually while being interviewed on television.

"It happened as I was going to pie Wes (Helms) in the face and when I jumped I landed on my knee wrong. That's how I hurt it," Coghlan told the Palm Beach Post.

In May, the Angels lost Morales for the year when he suffered a broken leg leaping on to home plate in a celebration with a crowd of teammates after hitting a walk-off grand slam.

Added Coghlan: "Hopefully through this experience, obviously Kendry Morales' was a little bit more serious than mine, but hopefully players around the league will realize that even though were all excited just to be a little bit more cautious, a little bit more safe when we celebrate. It was one of those freak things that happen."

Helms said he saw Coghlan icing the knee on the plane ride to San Francisco but figured it was the result of his getting hit by a pitch earlier. He discovered the cause Monday.

"You hate for this to be the cancellation of the celebration but you can't take celebrations too far. Each time you celebrate it seems like it gets more and more exciting and guys get more and more into it," Helms told the Post. "Any time you go after a guy like that and chase him down, it's very dangerous. It really is. Anybody can get stepped on. You can turn an ankle. This year with Morales and now Coghlan it has maybe opened up not just to us but to the whole league that, 'Hey on these celebrations we need to be careful.' "

Thats at least two injuries I can think of from celebration. Clubs must get pissed that they have to pay for medical treatment on these.

Well it is pretty stupid...you'd think a professional athlete could apply a pie in the face without getting hurt
