I dont know why I was hoping there'd actually be something here ;)

the latest tweets from Heyman:
mets mostly focused on relief now but not much developing so far. wouldnt give ike or niese for oswalt and his $.
mets dont seem to want to trade francoeur for jose guillen. that would be a rough switch for clubhouse.
tigger
I wish they would release castillo, that would be a positive for the clubhouse, the lineup, the defense.
kaol
Mets are looking to obtain Tom Gorzelanny from the Cubs, but so far the Cubs are reluctant. The Mets have rejected a trade of Josh Thole and a prospect for Ted Lilly.
tigger
Get rid of the old (castillo), keep the young. No more washed up guys from other teams that we trade our kids for.
MaricopaMetFan
Does Tigger have something against Luis Castillo?
kaol
WELL, THEY"VE DONE IT! Mets send Mike Jacobs to Toronto, promote Nick Evans. Terms undisclosed.
Phil the Phan
Jacobs wsn't on the 25--who went down for Evans?

Mets reject offer of Kirk Neuwenhuis and second top prospect for Toronto's Downs.

Can we send Castillo back to the twins?

Hard to say--she's so subtle about it.

Just great. Omar has given up on the season. I can't believe he dealt our opening day cleanup hitter and 1B.

Hey. A couple of those balls look almost new!
GTS41
Very little they can do when they have two roster spots (Ollie and Luis) and refuse to eat the salaries of perhaps the two most overpriced/useless characters in franchise history.
The rest of the team has to finds it totally demoralizing. I know I do.
Phil the Phan
Just out of curiosity--do you see any other teams out there eating bloated ill-thought-out contracts to overpaid doorknobs?
Seems like a whole lotta teams have players like that (Carlos Zambrano comes to mind) and I don't see any of them being released.
Must be an awful lot of demoralized teams out there...
GTS41
Off the top of my head I can think of GMJ, Sheffield (Where'd they wind up again?) and Jeff Suppan. I'm sure I can think of a few more.
kaol
Mets turned down an offer of Parnell and Josh Thole for Brett Myers. Mets offered Ollie and Castillo for Zambrano, Cubs rejected Castillo, but have an interest in Perez. A deal might get done here.
tigger
If we're taking Zambrano I'd insist Castillo was part of the deal. If we have to eat his salary, fine. Just get him out of here.
GTS41
Really makes you appreciate Nelson Doubleday, when Piazza became available.
Fred: We already have a catcher. Todd Hundley will be back roids and all.

NO DEAL!!!
fanof41
Perhaps Omar -- in seeing Frank Cashen, Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry and Davey Johnson around the ballpark the past couple of days -- thought there'd been a transaction worked out through the space/time continuum and the club was set to make a serious run against the Cubs and Cardinals in the NL East for the next two months...

In the last 2 1/2 years (since the 08 season began), the only trade Omar's made that has had any serious impact on the Mets was Francouer for Church. I don't know why anyone thought it would be any different today.
Cyberlibrarian
Church just got traded to the D'backs, from what I saw on the MLB Network crawl.

Chevy Chase: And now, as a public service to those of our viewers who have difficulty with their hearing, I will repeat the top story of the day, aided by the Headmaster of the New York School for the Hard-of-Hearing - Mr. Garrett Morris.
[ Garrett appears in an oval over Chevy's right shoulder ]
Garrett Morris: [ cups his hands and yells ] "OUR TOP STORY TONIGHT!!!"
Chevy Chase: Mets do not make a deal.
Garrett Morris: [ yelling ] "METS DO NOT MAKE A DEAL!!!"
Chevy Chase: Good night, and have a pleasant tomorrow.
Garrett Morris: [ yelling ] "GOOD NIGHT, AND HAVE A PLEASANT TO-MOR-ROW!!!"

Very nice! 'Bet that was an "amazin'" time. :)

As Gary and Ron said, it's not necessarily a bad thing that Omar didn't make any trades. They made some excellent points, IMO.

Going to the HOF induction today. It'll be great to see the 86 team! (or who ever else shows up)

It's fine to only make one trade in 2 1/2 years--and none in over a year--if (a) you believe you have the talent to make the posteseason, or (b) you don't care about making the postseason.
I wonder which applies here...

Or could something else be at play here? Like other GM's have been burned in trades with Omar so now any deal that Omar proposes makes them expect a premium from the Mets.
Phil the Phan
How can Omar have burned other GMs in trades when Omar hasn't MADE any trades with them? When was the last time Omar made a deal; with the Cubs, Indians, D-Backs or Royals, all of whom have traded away players in the last week or two who could have helped out here.
Example: From every report the Cubs were prepared to trade Zambrano for Ollie...but the Mets insisted on including Castillo so the salaries would match up--and the Cubs wanted no part of Castillo. So how can we not conclude that the Mets will not take on additional salary? It wasn't about being gunshy about Zambrano, since they would have taken him.
I hated to believe the Mets were letting salary considerations impact on their decisions, but how can you reasonably conclude otherwise?
Replace-Met
I agree the Zambrano for Perez/Castillo potential trade was only about money. Though I'm not sure if I would have done the trade straight up Perez for Zambrano. Zambrano comes with baggage.
I was thinking more about the other trade rumors, the ones that centered around Niese for Oswalt, or Davis for Lee, or Thole for Myers or Lilly all plus prospects. Seemed like the other teams were asking alot more from the Mets than what they settled with, but I'm jaded. And I guess my next thought was if other GM's are exacting a premium to make deal with the Mets because of Minaya for whatever reason, then that needs to be looked at too.
I was expecting a deal with Murphy to materialize but I didn't hear a single rumor with his name tied to it.
Replace-Met
nevermind with Murphy, I didn't know he's out for the season with an injury.

Off the top of my head I can think of GMJ, Sheffield (Where'd they wind up again?) and Jeff Suppan. I'm sure I can think of a few more.
LAA paid $11.4MM for Matthews this year, and $10.9MM out of next years contract.
DET paid all but $400K of Sheffield's contract.
When was Suppan a Met?
Phil the Phan
I think he was answering my question:
Just out of curiosity--do you see any other teams out there eating bloated ill-thought-out contracts to overpaid doorknobs?
The examples GTS gave tho were (I believe) trades where a team ate a good chunk of the contract. I was looking for examples where a player was just plain let go, as many are criticizing the Mets for not doing with Perez.
Lee27
Letting Perez go is a viable option ONLY if the Mets have someone pitching lights out in the minors. His spot in the bullpen still needs to be filled.

Phil, Sheff was released. The Mets paid him close to league minimum. Suppan
was released by the small market Brewers and cleared waivers, than signed
with the Cards as a FA. GMJ was traded (Stokes) with LAA picking up all but
2 Million of the $23.5 remaining on his contract.
Phil the Phan
OK I stand corrected on Sheffield and Suppan. But that's two in--what--2 seasons?
My point remains that there are far more teams holding on to their untradeable players with bloated contracts then there are teams releasng these players.
