Met references on TV/Movies
I know there's thread about this but I can't find it.
Blue Bloods on CBS this past Friday, one cop to another: "Your case is weaker than the Mets bullpen."

I think my favorite is Jerry and the naked man talking about the Mets on the subway.

That movie was just all 'round retarded. They wouldn't leave a rape victim half naked alone in a big cold open examining room to feel exposed and vulnerable. They'd give her scrubs and a decent blanket and curtains, for crying out loud. And I'm sure in that situation, a nun would get if anything, better care, not worse. Someone would have been there trying to comfort her, not leaving her alone to be spied on by a creepy cop.

That's a good question. I college I thought he was really good, but in retrospect... I can't think of anything that currently impresses me the way I was impressed with him in college.

Saw John Leguizamo's new play Ghetto Klown tonight--when he proposes to his wife, among the things he lists to show what he's learned from life:
"I'm a Mets fan, so I've learned how to love unconditionally and get absolutely nothing in return."

Fever Pitch...when the buddies find him in a darkened room watching the Buckner error, over and over again.
Madagascar (Video Game). Alex is running through nearly deserted NYC Streets and says "Where is everybody? The Mets must be in town!"

There's a Joe Jackson song called "Right or Wrong" where he asks "You like the Yankees or the Mets this year?"

You know, I want to like BlueBloods soooo much. But it sucks. I watch every week hoping it will get better - but it gets worse.
It should be a show I like. Brooklyn. Donnie Walberg. Jennifer Esposito. Cop show. What more can you want? I know - a plot - some acting - the slightest hint of reality in regards to child characters... It's the same thing every week. It sucks to be a cop - it's dangerous to be a cop - cops get killed - cops wives and children live in fear - dramatic totally unrealistic speeches. It never gets better. Tom Selleck, the great grandfather, the short haired teenage girl and the blonde suck. Last week singing the song from Annie - I thought I was going to puke. Why are that girl and old man in acting at all? They couldn't act their way out of a paper bag. Maybe Tom Selleck and the blonde don't totally bite - but the great grandfather and the short haired girl must go, because Tom and the blonde aren't strong enough to act around them without getting sucked down. Will Estes is borderline sucky too. But he might be like Tom and the Blonde and maybe wouldn't suck if the other two super-sucky actors were gone. And that "poignant" or whatever the fuck it was supposed to be, moment where the boy said "I think you have two lives [long pause] the one you're born into and the one you choose" give me a fucking break. Maybe if the mom said it - but what kid says stuff like that? Even if they grow up with their mind on their cop family - what kid that age would ever say something like that? But maybe this week it will be better because I'm totally going to watch it anyway. ![]()

![]() Except "the old man" is Len Cariou, who is a highly-respected stage actor....he won a Tony for playing the title role in Sweeney Todd. But yeah, in this he's wasted. But I've always been a sucker for cop/lawyer shows. I even like Harry's Law....

I've been losing interest in Blue Bloods as well. For some of the same reasons, but not all. Yes, that song and dance act was PAINFUL. Yes, it's predictable. But I think Selleck's performance is the main reason to watch. Maybe the only one, come to think of it. And I fast forward through most of Walberg's scenes, which is a large portion of the show, so as not to endure yet another "dere not gunna do dis in MY CITY."

I must admit, Donnie Walberg is not good in this. I guess the only problem with them being NYPD legacy is that Donnie can't have grown up in Boston as part of the story line. Faking accents goes bad so often. Angie Harmon on L&O = good. She made no attempt to have a NY accent. Angie Harmon on Rissoli & Isles = terrible. She is from Texas. She is not from Boston. Her Boston accent is terrible. The only thing worse than Angie Harmon's Boston accent is Donnie Walberg's NY accent.

This is a bit obscure, but the video for Springsteen's "Glory Days" shows a clip from a Mets-Reds game.

Mr. Met on 30 Rock tonight! I turned around from the computer because I wanted to see what was going on during a song that was being sung, and there was Mr. Met! I have no idea in what context he appeared, though.

Another Shea reference (that makes 3 for me), in The Prisoner of Second Ave., when Jack Lemon sees the bright lights in the apartment, he says: "It is brighter then a night game at Shea stadium"

Last week MeTV aired the first episode of Get Smart--the password Max was supposed to use to meet 99 for the first time is "Mets Sweep a Doubleheader."
Problem was, the day before the meeting the Mets actually did sweep a DH and it was on the back page of the sports section, so everyone was saying it and Max didn't know which one was 99.

Oh how I wish Direct TV aired that station 24\7. We get it but only from 9 in the morning until 10 at night and the rest is infomercials etc. They have classic stuff, but I don't get to see The Untouchables, The Rebel (when they had it) etc etc.

I watched the extra bits and they talked about how Shea had been torn down before they were making the movie, and how they tried to replicate the place as well as they could (there's a scene that takes place inside Shea in 1969 but earlier in the year than October and they watch the WS, hard to explain). I liked this movie.
